Bruce screams out to God in desperation, “Tell me what’s going on, what should I do—give me a signal!” Before he can take another breath, he passes a brightly lit sign: Caution Ahead. So distracted and blinded by his own lostness and anger, he misses the message. Again he cries out, “I need Your guidance, Lord; please send me a sign!” Immediately a large road-crew truck pulls in front of him. The back of the truck is filled with street signs in plain view: Stop. Dead End. Wrong Way. Do Not Enter. Oblivious to any connection or significance these signs have to his prayer, Bruce speeds past the truck and into catastrophe. This scene from the movie Bruce Almighty is a perfect illustration of how most of us deal with the search for our glory. The answer is closer than we have been led to believe.
God has given us a road map for the life each of us is meant to live. But the map is contained in a place we seldom go—our hearts— and it is written in “cryptic form” and “mysterious symbols,” symbols that we seldom try to decipher. In frustration, irritation, and anger we bypass our hearts and desires and “despair because our lives seem meaningless.”
