Hands Down #1: Jeremiah Johnson - From my earliest days of youth, I longed for adventure as an 18th century American pioneer. My hero's were Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Jedediah Smith, and Thomas Fitzpatrick "Broken Hand".
For many of the same reasons, Last of the Mohicans and The Patriot are additional favorites. I believe the haunting quote of Benjamin Martin in The Patriot is every man's fear, "I have long feared that the sins of my past would someday revisit me and the cost would be more than I can bear."
Finally, Braveheart, for it's connection with my Scottish roots from the Forsyth Clan.
The common thread, I believe, in each of these is the lead characters' fierce independence and willingness to take on all challengers and persevere at all costs for what they believed and held sacred, FREEDOM!
- The Frontiersman by Allan Eckert - The Story of Simon Kenton, 18th Century Pioneer / Frontiersman. This book was introduced to me at age 16 by my mentor and life long friend, Jack Cline. He was the noblest man I ever knew.
- You Gotta Keep Dancing & Holy Sweat by Tim Hansel - His life inspired me throughout my career in outdoor education and ministry.
- Wild at Heart by John Eldredge and The Heart of a Warrior by Michael Thompson - These books have and are helping me transition from a King to a Sage. They have literally awakened me to God's desire to draw me closer and deepen our relationship.
- The Mountains - I am most at home, closest to God, roaming, exploring, hunting with my bow in hand.
- Rivers - The power of the water as my canoe glides between the rocks and breaks the calm of glassy lake waters on a still day.
- I have been blessed with some great trips to exciting countries throughout my career. One of my most favorite experiences was exploring the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. The beauty and grandeur of God's creation is breathtaking.
