Several years ago, a couple of close friends and I traveled to Florida to conduct a weekend orientation for a friend’s company. Eight men, all very “successful” regional sales reps from around the country, assembled to talk about the past quarter and set goals for the coming year.
We were invited in to stir things within the group and encourage the participants to explore their hearts, in hopes that the team would go deeper with each other and their own desires. After several hours together and some great sharing exercises, we asked the men to consider and write down what they would be doing if they were not in their current role. The outcome was remarkable. As each man shared, the others threw out lines of encouragement: “I could totally see you doing that,” or “You would be so good at that. I never knew that about you.”
Then we asked them: what is keeping you from stepping into these wonderful roles and initiatives? When it came down to it, it wasn’t money, family, or responsibility. It was fear. They admitted being comfortable where they were and afraid of the unknown.
